At the edge of the water in Tasmania tiny living organisms glow brightly when they are disturbed, the light they emit is a form of chemiluminescence.
These tiny creatures make for a beautiful sight in this video as they are gently disturbed at the waters edge by a couple of waders. Surprisingly bioluminescence occurs widely in Marine vertebrates and invertebrates.
Bioluminescence occurs in diverse marine organisms such as: bacteria, worms, algae, jellyfish, seastars, crustaceans, fish, and sharks to name just a few. In some cases, marine animals take in bacteria or other bioluminescent creatures to gain the ability to give off light.
